Underworld: Blood Wars: Film Review – Selene Saves the Day Again

Verdict: A positive step away from the previous installments.

Vampires are considered fascinating creatures with their pale skin and their penchant for black clothes and darkness. We have seen vampires in various forms like the ones that are downright scary and creepy to hot ones who even shine like diamonds. If we have to name a movie franchise that gives the best of both kinds it has to be the Underworld series, which has hot vampires who can also be very scary. Surprisingly this franchise is not inspired from a book or a game but is a standalone series and has managed to acquire a sizeable fan base of its own.

gallery_image_1Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and David (Theo James) are on the run from the Vampires and the Lycans. Lycans who have a new leader Marcius (Tobias Menzies) are looking for her to gather the whereabouts of her child Eve and the vampires want to bring her to justice for killing Victor. Semira (Lara Pulver) who is the ambitious leader of the Eastern coven has requested the elders with the help of Thomas (Charles Dance) to welcome back Selina as they need her skills to defend them against the oncoming Lycan attack. The Lycans are more organised now under Marcius who is a form of hybrid. Bur all is not as simple as it seems when Semira with the help of Varga (Theo James) once makes Selene seek sanctuary somewhere else.

When it comes to action sequences, this movie has managed to one-up the previous movies with a training montage, which should make all the vampires proud and all the Lycans cower in fear. But when it comes to special effects, things are found lacking with the blood and gore that looks a tad fake. The tone of the film has not changed although Seline and David don't burn under sunlight. The story acts as a pleasing interface between battles where vampires and Lycans tear each other to shreds.

Tobias Menzies and Lara Pulver as antagonists have done an amazing job and it has been a treat to watch our favorite British actors on screen again. Kate Beckinsale still carries off Selene just as good as the first movie. Anna Foerester has done an excellent job of balancing the action with the story and keeping intact the goth factor that has been common across all the previous editions.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
If you are a fan of the franchise, this movie will be a nostalgia ride with something new added in the mix. For people who don't want to watch the previous movies, there are enough lessons, which don't make you feel like you have missed anything. A good vampire vs sort-of-werewolves fight is something you should never miss.
