Unforgettable Indian Sports movies

An unforgettable moment for Indian cricket and for every Indian, today is the day when Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar finally retired from the  game which he defined so elegantly . His farewell speech brought tears in every Indian’s eyes. Everyone had a profound realization that now they won`t be able to see him batting for India. From  this day onwards, cricket will always miss one of its true superstars and a true legend . On such an emotional moment, I try to recap five of the best sports movies that were made in India expressing the the undying spirit of sports through  he moving images.

Chak de India(2007): Arguably one of the best performances by Shahrukh Khan , the movie brought national attention back to Hockey . An emotional  story of an ex Indian captain turned Hockey coach who guides the Indian women’s hockey team to win the coveted title of world championship .

Lagaan(2003): The sports movie which made its way from  India to the Oscars in the category of best foreign language film , but sadly lost to another brilliant film , No Man’s Land. This is the story of a group of villagers who play a cricket to get rid of the taxes they had to pay in the times when British ruled India.

Iqbal(2005): A simple villager boy who becomes a main bowler of Indian cricket team, Iqbal is the journey of dreams and  conviction to achieve them. Brilliant performance by Shreyas Talpade and Naseeruddin Shah  as a troubled alcoholic coach.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander(1992): Remember the times when we were in school and there used to be a inter school competition. The story of a reckless guy who finally tries to win the Inter college bicycle race in the end to claim victory. A profound story of love , brotherhood and finding out the strength to achieve it.

Awwal Number(1990) :One of those early sports movies based on cricket, this starred Amir Khan and Aditya Pancholi along with the legendary Dev Anand (he directed it also) . A captivating story of  professional rivalry among competitors and eventually excelling at the occasion when it matters the most .
