Films based on sports are uncommon in Tamil cinema. Vallinam is one such movie based on the not-so-talked about sport in India, Basketball. In a country where cricket is given utmost importance, a group of students try to change that notion.

The film begins with Krishna (Nakul), a dexterous basketball player who is shattered after the death of his friend in the basketball court, which leads him to give up playing the sport. Hurt and demoralized, he joins a college in the city and slowly befriends Guna. The hero then clashes with the cricket team captain, Vamsi who tries to terminate all the other sports in college. To defend his friends and win the basketball league, Krishna challenges Vamsi that they would win the Basketball tournament. The rest of the story revolves around how the team emerges victorious.
The film’s credits open with animated sequences including the representation of cave-men killing a mighty beast. The director probably tried to convey the concept of underdogs winning the battle and/or to show how team effort wins. Sadly, this isn’t visible in the film. The first-half is unvaried and soulless, the second-half goes on and on leading to a hauling and predictable narration. Vallinam is heavily inspired from Chak De India and Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu. But this film clearly fails to create an impact like the aforementioned blockbusters. It mixes up the plot, drags endlessly and confuses the audience with its unclear motive. Nakul is good in the role and emotes well, but we wish his Tamil dialect improves in due course of time. The rivalry between Krishna and Vamsi is rather juvenile. The film lacks the genuine and fresh approach which sports films ought to have. It also lags due to the presence of numerous characters in the film.
A film based on sports is supposed to charm us, endear us to vouch for the underdogs but this film fails to do so. Director Arivazhagan fails to create the magic of his first film Eeram. Overall, the film is predictable and leaves you disappointed.
