Verdict: Content is the king in this Binnu Dhillon-Amrinder Gill starrer.
Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end. This saying accurately defines Vekh Barataan Challiyan. Director Ksshitij Chaudhary beautifully adapts the virgin story of Naresh Kathooria, takes on-board talented actors like Binnu Dhillon, Jaswinder Bhalla, Amrinder Gill, Govind Namdeo et al. and dishes out an extremely likeable Vekh Barataan Challiyan. The movie is another shining example that Punjabi cinema is going through its best phase where filmmakers are not shying away from venturing into unexplored territories and succeeding.
Vekh Barataan Challiyan is the story of Jaggi (Binnu Dhillon), son of a bus owner from Punjab and Sarla, a teacher from Haryana. Jaggi falls in love with Sarla who eventually reciprocates his love. But they belong to different communities as Jaggi is from a Punjabi Jatt Sikh family and Sarla is from Haryanavi Jaat family. When Jaggi proposes marriage, Sarla’s father, who is a firm believer of astrology, lays down a condition that the two can marry only if their horoscopes match. The astrologer discovers that Jaggi is manglik and declares that marriage cannot take place. Will Jaggi come out with a solution and get married to Sarla?
Though love stories are done to death by every type of cinema, it is not every day do you come across a concept like that of Vekh Barataan Challiyan. In the beginning, it’s the story of any commoner who experiences love at first sight. The girl takes her own sweet time to realize and returns Binnu’s feelings. The initial hour has an undercurrent of love wherein Binnu’s character is explained as someone who would take any risk to bring a smile on his beloved’s face. The viewer gets a feeling that all will not be rosy in this love story.
Once the writer and director open their cards, the viewer is taken aback as Binnu gets marriage to a bitch (we mean a female dog, of course). Initially, you feel a bit uncomfortable as Binnu takes saat pheras with a bitch, but soon a series of comedic events ensue which keep the movie on the right track. Also, the story grips you back as Amrinder Gill is introduced. The sequences in the pre-climax and climax are gripping, and the story has a befitting ending. Having said that, viewer would also feel that Amrinder Gill should have walked out with Sarla’s sister in the end.
Vekh Barataan Challiyan belongs to Binnu Dhillon. The gifted actor brings utmost innocence into his character, who knows nothing more that love for Kavita’s character. This is the second time he has worked as the main lead of a film, and he does complete justice to the confidence that the makers have had in him. Kavita Kaushik is a seasoned actor who is making her Pollywood debut with Vekh Barataan Challiyan. She gets to perform a confident and loud Haryanvi girl, and not once do you feel that she has gone overboard. She gets sidelined in the second half but delivers an impactful performance. Ranjit Bawa brings the house down with his altercations with Jaswinder Bhalla. Usually, the antagonist’s character draws hatred and dislike from the viewers, but his role will redefine those terms. Arguably, his character will be the most loved one amongst all in the days to come. Amrinder Gill makes a small but significant appearance in the film. He delivers a superlative performance and surprises the viewers with his near perfect Haryanvi dialect. Amongst character artists, Jaswinder Bhalla is brilliant, Karamjit Anmol is first-rate and Govind Namdeo is effective.
Ksshitij Chaudhary is a seasoned director who knows the essence of a Punjabi viewer. This time around, he has merged the hearts of neighbouring states and presented a believable love story. This is his most accomplished work after Mr. & Mrs. 420, which also had Binnu Dhillon and Jaswinder Bhalla in prominent roles. Naresh Kathooria comes up with yet another loveable script which will make the viewer smile, laugh and fall in love with it. The editing (Manish More) is crisp and background score makes the proceedings even more interesting.
