Upcoming film Victoria & Abdul has been in the news for quite a while now because of its Indian connections. It explores the friendly relationship of the British monarch, Queen Victoria, and her Indian servant, Abdul Karim. The movie stars actress Dame Judi Dench, who is famous for her roles in A Room with a View, Skyfall, and Shakespeare in Love. Meanwhile, the role of Abdul Karim is being played by Indian actor Ali Fazal, who rose to prominence in Bollywood with the 2013 comedy flick, Fukrey. He continued to star in several more films – Hollywood and Bollywood – with Victoria & Abdul being his first big international break. But you already know this. Here are some more details about the movie you need to know.
Director: Stephen Frears

Cast: Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Michael Gambon

Victoria & Abdul is a British-American film, which will release in India in English. Directed by the Academy Award nominee, Frears has also directed popular movies like Dangerous Liaisons, The Queen, Philomena and Florence Foster Jenkins. Victoria & Abdul is based on the book by Shrabani Basu, which explores the unlikely friendship between the Queen of England and her Indian servant. This relationship they share is certainly envious of many and the Queen grows significantly fond of her ‘brown’ friend, much to people’s chagrin. Judi Dench and Ali Fazal play the Queen and the servant respectively. They seem to strike an amazing chemistry in the trailer of the film, which only gives us a glimpse of the story. We believe a lot lies in store where this unusual relationship is concerned and both the characters are likely to face the consequences for it. The book has been adapted into a screenplay for the film by Lee Hall, who is best known for the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.
While Ali Fazal has previously appeared in movies like The Other End of the Line and Furious 7 (both special appearances), this is his first full-length feature film in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Judi Dench has been there, done that, in Mrs. Brown (1997), in which she again played Queen Victoria as the film explored her character’s friendship with her Scottish servant. Victoria and Abdul also stars famous voice actor Eddie Izzard as Bertie, Prince of Wales and Michael Gambon (famous for his role as Albus Dumbledore) as Lord Salisbury.
Screened at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival this year, the movie is now set to hit the screens across the country this Friday. While the storyline is exciting, we have no doubts that Fazal will be the crowd-pulling factor in India. Indeed, Bollywood fans cannot wait to see the actor in this Hollywood film and we wish him all the best for his upcoming release.
