TV show watchers know Viola Davis. It would be hard to miss her when she is nominated every year for the Best Actress Emmy. She was recently seen in Suicide Squad playing the badass intelligence operative Amanda Waller. Anyone who has seen her on TV or in the movies will agree that she is one hell of an actress. She has amazing screen presence, a powerful voice and delivers brilliant performances. Based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett, this 2011 period drama starred Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain and Davis herself. The film delved into the racism faced by colored maids who worked for white families. The film received critical acclaim and the performances of the lead actresses were highly praised. If you haven’t already seen this movie, it should be on top of your watch list.
How To Get Away With Murder
This Shonda Rhimes crime drama is one of the best shows on TV today. It stars Davis in the lead role, as Annalise Keating, a law professor and criminal lawyer, who gets embroiled in a murder, along with five of her students. The third season of the show is set to premiere in September. That gives you enough time to binge-watch the previous seasons. Beware: once you start, you won’t get a wink of sleep!
An adaptation of John Patrick Shanley‘s Pulitzer-winning play, Doubt starred some of the best actors in Hollywood, namely Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. The story dealt with the illicit relationship of a priest and an altar boy. The movie was heavily praised by critics and all four actors received Academy Award nominations.
Eat Pray Love
You have definitely heard of this 2010 romantic drama film, starring Julia Roberts, and probably even read the book it has been based on. Davis played the best friend of lead character Gilbert (Roberts). If you have not already seen it, watch it now! It will motivate to travel more, eat more and enjoy more.
The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby
If you think that this movie has something to do with The Beatles (because of their popular song Eleanor Rigby), it doesn’t. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby is the collective title of three films, starring James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain. Davis played Chastain’s friend and professor in the second movie, titled ‘Her’, providing her the support she needed to deal with depression.
United States of Tara
This comedy drama TV show was on air from 2009 to 2011 for three seasons. It dealt with the struggles of a suburban housewife and mother grappling with dissociative identity disorder. Davis was a recurring character, playing the role of an artist who befriends the daughter of the lead character. Even though it ran for a short time, the critical response to the show was mostly positive.
