The much sought- after award for anyone related to filmmaking is the Academy Awards and the joy of being even nominated for the Oscars is simply amazing. This time in the Oscar race were some of the biggest box-office blockbuster movies like Sairat, Bajirao Mastani, Sultan, Fan, Airlift and Udta Punjab. Beating all these movies and going to the Oscars is the Tamil movie Visaaranai directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Wunderbar Films, which is actor Dhanush's production house. What makes this movie so special, you ask? Let's find out some of the interesting facts of the movie that could fetch India the much coveted Oscars this year.
Visaaranai competed with 29 movies to make it to the Oscars as India's official entry in the Foreign Language Film category. Selected by a jury of the Film Federation of India, Visaaranai is a Tamil docu-drama crime thriller, which is based on the novel Lock Up by auto driver-turned-writer M. Chandrakumar.
Interestingly, the author of the novel, who is popularly known as Auto Chandran, wrote the book based on the police brutality and corruption that he suffered in his early life. In 1983, Chandran was locked up along with his three friends and subjected to brutal police treatment to accept a crime that they never even committed.
Visaaranai, starring Dinesh Ravi, Samuthirakani, Kishore, Ajay Ghosh, Anandhi and Aadukalam Murugadoss, premiered at the Venice International Film festival in 2015 before it had a theatrical release in February 2016. The film won three prestigious National Awards with Samuthirakani bagging the award for best supporting actor. The film also won the Amnesty International Italia Award, 2015 and interestingly, the international version had no music while the theatre version did.
The last Tamil movie to have made it to the Oscar entry list was the Kamal Haasan starrer Hey Ram',which was also directed by Kamal Haasan.
Owing to his Bollywood commitment, Dhanush could not play the lead role in the movie but he still decided to be a part of the film and produced the movie under his home production – Wunderbar Films.
