Vitti Dandu: Film Review – An ancient game, a freedom struggle!

Vitti Dandu is a story told by a grandfather to his grandson. He wishes to educate the child about the wonders of nature and about the freedom struggle.

Rohan, (Shubhankar Atre) along with his grandfather (Ravindra Mankani) embark on a trip to Morgao, their ancestral village. Thus begins Rohan’s tryst with Vitti Dandu! As the story unfolds, we are taken back to pre-independence India. The country was under unfair British rule and Morgao was under the supervision of a particularly ruthless officer called Kaufner. Daji’s (Dilip Prabhavalkar) son and daughter-in-law are killed by Kaufner. In order to protect his grandson Govind (Nishant Bhavsar), Daji begins to support the Britishers and tries to adapt to the English manner of speaking and dressing. This is met with a lot of resistance from the villagers who call him an insult to the sacrifices made by his son and daughter-in-law.

A twist in the tale occurs when Kaufner is killed when Govind hits him with a vitti by accident. There is a chance he will be held responsible and punished for it. So Daji decides to take the blame and lands up in jail. He is now seen as sort of a secret revolutionary hero. Soon the villagers unite under the leadership of Daji. Watching a bunch of kids drive out the Englishmen with only vittis as weapons is a treat.

The film is set across two time periods. The flashbacks take you back to a time when India was chained to the British Empire. However, the actors who play Englishmen over do the accent and acting. Also, some characters like Bappu (Ashok Samarth) and Usman Chacha (Yatin Karyekar) are caricatures. The music is too contemporary to fit the time.

Dilip Prabhavalkar is brilliant as Daji, the common man who doesn’t want to lose another child to the freedom struggle. He leaves you teary-eyed as he sails across the lake crying out his dead son’s name over and over again. Both child actors Nishant and Shubhankar have done a fabulous job.

Why should you watch the film?

Vitti Dandu is a thought-provoking story about a grandfather’s love for his grandson and his unintentional foray into the freedom struggle.
