Finally India’s first official remake is here. Adapted from Julia Robert-starrer, Step Mom, We are Family paves the path for an entire new era of Indian Cinema; an era which finally plagiarizes plots legally.
What is it about?
Basically, a story of divorced couple, Maya (Kajol) and Aman (Arjun Rampal), who love their kids to death. Maya is a doting mother whose sole ambition is raising her three children. Things run amok when Dad Aman brings home his girlfriend, Shreya (Kareena Kapoor), on his youngest daughter’s birthday. Shreya tries her best to woo the children. However, the children remain far from impressed. To make matters worse, Maya hates Shreya for trying to intrude in her family matters. The movie takes a sharp curve when we learn that Maya is diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer. Finally Maya decides to bring Shreya into the family and hone her parenting skills. Latter part of the movie deals with how Shreya adapts to the motherhood part and Maya’s dying battle with her illness.
The best thing of We are Family is – it stays true to the original story. Thankfully, the editor has kept the length of the movie short i.e. 1 hour 55 minutes. This prevents the movie from becoming an overdose of emotions. Director Siddharth Malhotra does not bombard the audience with lengthy dialogues and unending emotional conversations. Though a tearjerker, We Are Family has its share of light moments. Full points to the director for handling a family drama with maturity.
The narrative could have been much more interesting. Post-interval scenes are sloppy and predictable. Music is a big let down and none of the tracks linger in your mind.
Kajol has yet again delivered a stellar performance. After MNIK, she portrays a difficult role with surprising ease. Any other actress would have gone overboard with her expressions. However, Kajol has enacted her role with convincing reality. On the other hand, Kareena Kapoor’s acting is commendable. Arjun Rampal’s stupendous growth as an actor is evident. The kids are fabulous too, especially the youngest actor in the movie, Divya Sonecha.
We are Family is a simple and sweet family film. It will strike a chord with audiences who love feel-good family dramas. A must-watch with your family.
