Assassin’s Creed – chances are you might have heard the name from your friends talking about it. In case you don’t know about it, it is one of the most famous video game franchises, nine years old now. The game is known most for its famous parkour, and trademark weapon, The Hidden Blades. This December, Michael Fassbender stars in an action/adventure movie based on the video game.
The Assassin’s Creed universe is a vast place with the characters and their ideology conflicting with each other. There’s a lot of stuff linked with mythology and the modern world. The movie is not just a spin-off from the game, but has continuity with the video game. So, let us take a quick tour of important aspects of the game so that you don’t have to keep asking questions in the theatre.
It is highly advanced and most valuable technology from the past, which has the power to control the mind and actions of an individual. The Assassins and The Templars are engaged in tracking down these artifacts, and that is why there are lots of conflicts. The conflict has been happening since centuries, dating back to BC. So, who are these Assassins and Templars, and why are they tracking this technology?
Also known as “The Creed”, their role in this universe is to promote choice. Their motto is quoted as “We work in the dark to serve the light. We are Assassins. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.” The Assassins are basically trying to protect the world by keeping the Pieces of Eden away from the Templars because these things have the power to make people thoughtless servants to the Templars. The Assassins are just trying to give the world a chance to choose what they want without any mind alteration. The Creed’s motto- Nothing is true, everything is permitted- is just telling Assassins – to question and be critical of everything, to decide what is right for yourself and what you believe in.
Also known as “The Templar Order”, their role in this universe is to promote anarchy. They believe they know best, and anyone who stands in their way is dangerous. The Templars seek to take away the freedom and the choice because they think humans are evil and cannot handle making choices for themselves. For that reason, they want the Pieces of Eden to control and influence the minds of individuals. They want to form one giant government and ensure peace in this world by taking away the choice. Now, who made the Pieces of Eden?
The Isu, as they call themselves, are the ancient and advanced humanoids who were the first to live on the Earth. They are the creators of Pieces of Eden, as well as the human race. They created the human race as the domestic workforce and used the Pieces of Eden to control these humans, enslaving them. Two of these humans – who just happened to be Adam & Eve – escaped from the slavery and started a rebellion which grew into the war.
At the centre of Assassin’s Creed universe is this technology – the Animus. It is a technology representing the Assassin/Templar conflict. It’s a device that holds DNA- not just individual’s genetic data, but also the memories of one’s ancestor. This device is used for research and scientific purposes. So, why do that? Why would one want to go to their ancestor's memories? For Templars, it is way to track back the Pieces of Eden by extracting the memories. For Assassins, it is used for training purposes. Michael Fassbender’s character, Callum Lynch from the movie, will gain Assassin skills from his Spanish ancestor Aguilar. The Templars kidnap him to gain his past. All thanks to the Animus.
Abstergo is known for the invention of the Animus. As time marched on, into the 20th century, an organization was established for the Templars, through which they could conduct trade and commerce. Meanwhile, Assassins operate secretly.
Now that you are familiar with the essentials of the universe, watch the trailer, and get ready to watch the movie on December 30th!
