When Actors Used their Real Names in The Reel World

 Films are a world of fantasy that narrates stories that may or may not connect to real life. Actors don characters that are completely different from their real lives. They turn into action heroes, they dance and romance on the big screen. Filmmakers try hard to weave a story that the audience can connect with. They give unique characterization to the hero and a bit of realism to it and try to hold the attention of the audience. However, filmmakers use different means of making sure the character connects with the audience. Filmmakers are setting the trend of using the real names for the lead actors in films. Let’s look at some films in which actors have used their real names.

Rajinikanth – Movie: Sivaji (2007)
 
 
You may know him popularly as Rajinikanth – the superstar. However, the actor’s real name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad. Director Shankar decided to use Rajinikanth’s real name in the film. And, it eventually turned out to become one of the most popular character names. Mainly because it starred Rajinikanth as Sivaji – The Boss!
 
Ravi – Movie: Jayam (2003)
 
 
Actor Ravi got a prefix attached to his name after the success of his debut film, Jayam. Coincidentally, the director of the movie, his brother Raja, opted to use Ravi’s real name for his character in the film. 
 
Simbu – Movie: Kadhal Azhivathillai (2002)
 
 
Simbu used his real name in two films and both these films were directed by his father, T. Rajendar. He appeared as Simbu, a teenager in the film, Oru Vasantha Geetham and used the same name in his debut film (as a solo hero), Kadhal Azhivathillai.
 
Dhanush – Movie: Polladhavan (2007)
 
 
In Vetrimaaran’s Polladhavan, Dhanush played a character named, Prabhu. Wondering where the ‘Dhanush’ connect is? Well, Dhanush’s real name is Venkatesh Prabhu. We’re sure you didn’t know this one! 
 
Vikram – Movie: Thandavam (2012)
 
 
Vikram played the a role of a RAW agent, named Shivakumar, who decides to uncover a mystery by hiding his identity and changing his name to Kenny. Vikram’s real name is Kennedy, however, people fondly address him as Kenny.
 
Suriya – Movie: Vaaranam Aayiram (2008)
 
 
Suriya played dual roles in this Gautham Menon film. The actor played the roles of a father and a son. The ‘father’ was Krishnan, while the son’s character name was that of Suriya. Interestingly, Suriya is also a name that was adapted when he entered the film industry. His real name is Saravanan Sivakumar
 
Raghava Lawrence – Movie: Muni 2: Kanchana (2011) and Muni 3: Kanchana 2 (2015)
 
 
A sequel of the hit film Muni, Raghava Lawrence decided to use his real name in the film Muni 2: Kanchana and Muni 2: Kanchana 2. We all remember how hilariously his name was pronounced by his mother in the film (played by Kovi Sarala).
 
Vijay Sethupathi – Movie: Sethupathi (2016)
 
 
In one of the recent interviews, Vijay Sethupathi has declared that he didn’t want the director to name his film on him, as he didn’t want to project himself as the ultimate mass hero. But it looks like the audience didn’t perceive it in a negative way. The film worked wonders at the box office. And the title instantly caught the attention of the audience. 
 
Vijay – Movie: Theri (2016)
 
 
Vijay played three roles in in the cop drama, Theri. Joseph Kuruvilla, Dharmeshwar and police officer Vijay Kumar. The story of the film revolved around the character named Vijay Kumar. Vijay goes by the name Joseph Vijay in real life.
