Wild is the story of Cheryl Strayed, a former heroin addict who exorcised her inner demons by trekking for three months on the 1100-mile long Pacific Crest Trail. Basically she walked through California to Canada. Cheryl’s journey – both literal and metaphorical – seemed a tad clichéd. A bit too Eat Pray Love if you know what I mean.
But director Jean-Marc Vallee, writer Nick Hornby and leading lady Reese Witherspoon twist that cliché inside out. Wildis visually stunning and desperately sad. I can’t say that I totally understood Cheryl’s motivations but I empathized with her. I cried with her. Scene by scene, her arduous struggle – physical and emotional – became an inspiration.
