Wish the film maker used some Shahanpan
What to look out for: Some hilarious digs at religion in India
What not to look out for: Many stale jokes and gags
5 mental patients – Bharat Jadhav, Sanjay Narvekar, Ankush Chaudhary, Vaibhav Mangle and Shiddharth Jadhav, are wreaking havoc in a mental institution. Mahesh Manjrekar plays the sympathetic doctor who’s life is in danger when he uncovers a trafficking scam run by the Dean and his minions. The 5 mental patients then set out to save their good doctor’s life. The confusion and riot that follows is “Shahanpan Dega Deva”
Although hilarious in parts, the film has too many gags that fall flat. A ‘supposedly funny’ character – Mr. Padein is a spoof on a famous terrorist (Osama Bin ‘Laden’). But this terrorist with a gay twist, just doesn’t work. How much can you laugh about a gay terrorist whose special weapon is his powerful fart?
Even with the catchy music (especially the title track), the film as a whole is not as funny as one would expect. Considering there were some big-wigs like Manjrekar and Jadhav, the screen time given to these talented people is minimal to say the least. Partly written by Mahesh Manjrekar himself, one wishes he would have written a bigger role for himself.
Some good parts in the film include the scene at the police station, certain parts of the climax and most of the Heavenly avatars donned by Vaibhav Mangle. One can only imagine the potential this film had if the screenplay was tighter.
Verdict: Don’t expect too much
