World Cup 2015: Dropped catches that cost a bomb!

From AB’s acrobatics to Smith’s lightning reflexes, the World Cup has witnessed some of the most extraordinary catches. At the same time, few others were dropped, much to the dismay of bowlers and the delight of batsmen. Mind you, some of these dropped catches eventually turned out to be the deciding factor in the game’s outcome.

Here are the 5 costliest dropped catches of the World Cup so far!

1. Shikhar Dhawan – 137 vs South Africa

Hashim Amla’s reaction after he dropped Shikhar Dhawan was enough to make the Proteas realize their mistake. Dhawan then blazed his way to 137 and India posted 307 on the board. In response, South Africa couldn’t even get close to the Indian total.

2. Chris Gayle – 215 vs Zimbabwe

You do not put down Chris Gayle. Not when he’s batting first, not if you’re a weak bowling side. Not ever! Zimbabwe’s Tinashe Panyangara was probably cursing himself the moment he dropped Gayle. The result? Gayle smashed a record-breaking 215 and the Windies won the match.

3. Ed Joyce – 112 vs Zimbabwe

Once again, Zimbabwe learnt their lesson the hard way. Ireland’s Ed Joyce was dropped twice before he notched up a special hundred that set up his team’s total of 331. In the end, Ireland sneaked past Zimbabwe by just 5 runs!

4. Kumar Sangakkara – 104 vs Australia

Few can stop Kumar Sangakkara when he’s on song. Glenn Maxwell put down a rare chance that would have helped Australia get rid of Sanga early on. The veteran batsman went on to score his 3rd successive hundred of the World Cup. Although Sri Lanka lost the game, the Aussies did feel intimidated by Sanga’s attacking batting.

5. Shikhar Dhawan – 100 vs Ireland

Luck was yet again on Shikhar Dhawan’s side as the batsman was granted two reprieves by the Irish. John Mooney first put down a caught-and-bowled chance when Dhawan was playing on 5. 5 runs later, another one went down and Dhawan racked up his 2nd century of the tournament.
