World Cup 2015: India vs South Africa – Stat attack!

Team India just went from being underdogs to serious contenders in 2 matches at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Quite a few people rated India’s win over Pakistan higher than winning the cup itself. But the Men in Blue proved that their victory over Pakistan was no fluke, when they humbled the favorites – South Africa in their Group B clash on Sunday.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground was a sea of blue as Dhoni’s men jumped atop the points table with a massive 130-run win over the Proteas. Here’s some epic number-crunching from the game that was!
1. This was India’s first-ever victory against South Africa in all their World Cup encounters. India have lost three out of the four WC games played against SA. Hence, mauka, mauka!

2. South Africa has never won an ODI against India while chasing a 300-plus total. This was the fourth such instance. Chokers, anyone?
3. Shikhar Dhawan’s 137 was his personal best ODI score, as well as the highest individual score by any batsman against South Africa in any of the World Cups. The previous best was Stephen Fleming’s 134. Jat unleashed!
4. This was South Africa’s heaviest of their nine losses (130 runs) while chasing in World Cups. Ouch, that hurts!
5. India’s total (307) was the 2nd highest against South Africa in World Cups. Australia’s 377/6 in the 2007 edition remains in first position. Mighty!
6. Wayne Parnell conceded 85 runs in his 9 overs, the most by a South African bowler in during the World Cups. Taken to the cleaners!
7. A total of six opening batsmen, including Rohit Sharma in this match have been run-out on duck in the World Cups. Quack, quack!
8. Ajinkya Rahane’s strike rate of 131.66 from his innings of 79 is the best by a No.4 against SA in WC innings of 50 and more. Massive!
9. India’s score during the Batting Powerplay (44-0) is the second-best by any team against SA outside Asia in overs 36-40 since 2010. Death overs, what’s that?
10. The Indian openers have scored 5 centuries in ODIs in Australia so far, including Shikhar Dhawan’s 137. Three of the five have been at the MCG. Landmark!
