If you love alien-invasion-end-of-the-world films like “War of the Worlds” and “Independence Day”, then this one’s a good pick for you. Slimy looking aliens, handsome and heroic soldiers, corny dialogues and of course a large dose of the ‘Sound and Fury’. That’s sugar and spice to the regular Sci-Fi and action lover and this one has it all. With just the right amount of cliché, “World Invasion: Battle Log Angeles” takes you on a fast paced and racy SFX ride.
All alien invasion films have the same story. The story is not the reason why these films are so popular. But anyway, here goes. Aliens invade with the intention to wipe out earth’s population. Except this one is from a U.S. Marine’s point of view. A marine platoon headed by Staff Sgt. Mike Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) face off against an army of slimy, gangly and faceless extraterrestrials (why do all aliens look like the leftovers of a shark’s meal?).
Aaron Eckhart is surprisingly sincere as the dedicated marine in a role that would otherwise fit the likes of an always grinning Tom Cruise. Michelle Rodriquez is very likable in a role that she has done many times before (there is still something about a woman who’s lethal in combat). The special effects, the gritty combat sequences, the ‘guns and glory’ treatment, just the right amount of emotion. It all adds up to a good watch this weekend for Sci-Fi lovers.
