X-Men: Apocalypse: Film Review – Apocalypse For the Win

Verdict: A story of a beginning, a possible end and what happens in between.

It has been a great couple of weeks for Marvel fans. The X-Men franchise is back with X-Men: Apocalypse, and how! Many fans were a little skeptical about the casting, as the actors playing the roles of the mutant heroes have been etched into our minds. However, it can be safely said that the casting concerns can be put to rest. Sit back, let go, and enjoy this one.

X-Men: Apocalypse introduces the audience to Apocalypse, a powerful mutant who was worshipped and who can shift his consciousness into another mutant and absorb their characteristics. The film opens in Egypt in the BC era, with a fancy parade, and all is hunky-dory till we are taken inside the pyramid. One ominous looking ritual and a hardcore fight later, we are led to a sight to behold – the opening credits. We see Magneto (Michael Fassbender) in a never-seen-before avatar – as a dedicated husband and as a doting father. The films delves into the family life of Eric and answers a lot of questions about Magneto.

CIA agent Moira (Rose Byrne) plays an innocent and yet a vital role in the resurrection of the powerful Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). He wakes up in the 80s and is unhappy to see the human race fighting for power. We see the young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Scott/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp) struggling to discover the extent of their gift and to control it. Their young minds struggle to find a way through all the chaos. Oh yes, and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) is back and he will steal the show (and your heart) every time he has a scene, as usual. Professor X (James McAvoy), Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) play key roles as mentors to the young mutants as well as in saving the world from Apocalypse.

The film’s story is quite linear, as per X-Men standards, and is quite easy to follow. The VFX are insane and will blow your mind away for sure. Everyone seems to have gotten their fair share of limelight – right from Jean Grey to Quicksilver to Nightcrawler. There are funny moments that are signature Marvel. And as all Marvel movies go, do stay till all the end credits roll away- trust us!

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

If you are an X-Men person (you either are or you aren’t, no third option there), you don’t need this review or anything else to tell you why you should watch this. But you must go for the references made to the older movies. Getting those references will not only make you feel awesome, it will clear up so many things, too! If you aren’t an X-Men fan, watch it for the excellent VFX and for some good laughs. Either way, missing this is a big mistake.

P.S.: Stan Lee’s is not the only cameo to watch out for! *drops mic*
