X-Men: Days of Future Past (3D): Film Review – A wild ride through the past

X-Men: Days of Future Past! This is Bryan Singer‘s return to the movie franchise that started it all. We were exposed to the “Marvel”-ous world of superheroes and anti-heroes with the first X-Men movie. And now, the Days of Future Past takes us back to this amazing world. The film takes us on a wild ride. It involves time-travel, epic battles, wit and will. With a mega-cast consisting of Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawerence, this X-Men movie does what the other X-men movies couldn’t. It catches you and thrusts you in the middle of the action. You are immersed in this amazing world of  giant robots, Wolverine‘s claws, Mystique’s mind-blowing action, Quicksilver’s awesome speed and so much more. A worthy re-set of the X-Men universe.

The film starts off with a vision of our future. A dystopian world, where the mutant gene is hunted and exterminated. The X-Men are few and their numbers keep getting whittled down. Over the course of one of the battles, a new strategy is forged. To send one of their own through time and stop this one event which will ensure the survival of the mutants and humans alike. The nomination falls to the toughest, baddest and oldest X-Men, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). He is tasked with finding Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto a.k.a Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender). Wolverine has to bring them both together and along with Beast (Nicholas Hoult) stop the oncoming storm. There is danger on all sides. The story takes off from there. With events taking place during two points of the X-Men universe, one point being the past and the other, the future, there is a tendency to get lost in the plot. The film tries its level best to avoid confusion. There are amazing action sequences set during both points of the X-Men history. One notable one is when Quicksilver (Evan Peters) does what he does best. The other is the fight sequence at the start of the film. Don’t miss Blink’s (Fan Bingbing) awesome teleportation ability. The juxtaposition of two points in time makes for interesting viewing. Wolverine is fun again. And finally you get enemies who are ruthless and tough. On the whole, Days of Future Past gives you an epic ride all the way to the end.

However, while you are watching this film, you will wonder about the deus ex machina which will take place. The script is a little loose around certain parts. The trouble is that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are filling in the shoes and characters of Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. Those are big shoes to fill. Fassbender does his best, McAvoy is a little melodramatic at times, but it gets the job done. Jennifer Lawerence’s Mystique/Raven is fun in the action sequences. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is massive. The Wolverine shows his bone claws in this one. The one to watch to and enjoy is Quicksilver (Evan Peters). His power portrayal sets the stage for some rather fun bits of the film. You also get to see Warpath, Iceman, Sunspot, Colossus, Kitty Pryde a.k.a Shadowcat and Bishop run around making mayhem. Peter Dinklage as Dr. Bolivar Trask is mildly evil, not full-blown villainous at all. But his Sentinels make up for it. Overall, a good film which will make you go back to the X-Men franchise.

Why should you watch this film?

X-Men: Days of Future Past is return to the old. The future is shown dark and terrible, the past is given this shine but it isn’t what it seems. You are taken through this world and you will root for your heroes. The bad guys get their head kicked in, the good guys fight with honor, there are giant robots and loads of action. Don’t miss it, this is a brilliant cinematic experience!  For all you Marvel fans out there, remember to stay till the end of the credits.
