A Theatrical Dance Presentation
This theatrical production is based on women-centric stories and traces the lives of the four incredible women of performance art who were the first stars of Hindi Cinema as a leading actor, playback singer, as the first woman composer and as the doyen of music in cinema that is remembered till today. In the theatrical production two actors on stage discuss the various aspects of Hindi cinema in a well-scripted dialogue giving insight to the life and times of these brilliantly talented women who took the world of cinema by storm with their art. The actors while talking share anecdotes and real-life incidents of the forgotten incredible artists and trace the initial history of Hindi cinema through these women.
These women performers were semi-classical singers and largely Kathak dancers themselves, the lead character, the classical dancer forms an integral part of the theatrical story and recreates the music and dance of that era, linking the stories together, the songs actually sung by these great singers who were actors themselves.
This production along with an audiovisual also traces the music genre of Hindi cinema and how it took upon all the influences from the traditional Baiji singers. The songs of Tawaifs became the hit songs of the films and while the songs are remembered till today, the women are sadly forgotten. The dancer recreates these songs for the audiences, re-living a lost era.
