Aadi - the primordial

Anant - the eternal, the one that has no end….

The notion of ‘timelessness ’is unique to Indian philosophy. In contrast to life, which is fragile and perishable, the soul is regarded as indestructible and timeless. The time (kaal) is seen as an eternal river with a flow that is not linear but cyclic. With features such as these, the time is also closely associated with the process of creation and perpetuation. In Tantric Buddhism too, an endless cycle of time (kaalchakra) is an expression of a never-ending cycle of existence and also knowledge.

While artists are born and fade away in time, their creations live on as a precious cultural heritage. Hence, in the domain of Indian arts, the notion of ‘eternity’ could have a dual expression.

On one hand, artistic traditions are perpetuated from one generation to the next in an uninterrupted manner through the age-old institution of Guru (mentor) and shishya (disciple). In the eternal stream of time and knowledge, Guru-s groom shishya-s, who in turn carry forth the mantle of Guru and the cycle thus continues.

On the other hand, every generation witnesses a rise of creative minds, who strive to push the boundaries of tradition in pursuit of exploring new horizons. Such creative process ushers in changes that help redefine as well as rejuvenate traditions, which might otherwise remain stagnant and slowly perish in the course of time.

In fact, features such as these have enabled Indian music to evolve through a span of three millennia and more, despite many odds, making it the oldest surviving music tradition in the world today.

As trendsetters in their respective fields, CITI and NCPA stand committed to preserve and propagate the Indian heritage. Together, we are proud to present the eighth edition of  ‘CITI-NCPA Aadi Anant Festival’ across four cities: Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

The festival showcases celebrated Guru-s with their shishya-s as a testimony to the endurance of the tradition. We also feature works that are deeply rooted in the tradition and yet seek to delve into the infinite realms of creativity, inspired by the changing socio-cultural climate in which next generation of artists are being groomed.

Come, join us on this sonic journey from here to eternity!
