Hariprasad Chaurasia (Bansuri)

Rupak Kulkarni (Bansuri)

Supported by

Bhawani Shankar (Pakhawaj)

Vijay Ghate (Tabla)

Aditya Kalyanpur (Tabla)

Among the myriad musical instruments practiced in India, bamboo flute or bansuri is perhaps the most primitive and ancient instrument known for its unmistakable mythological connection with Lord Krishna, the cowherd of Brindavan. Notwithstanding an immense variety of flutes practiced across most cultures, the side-blown bamboo flute prevalent in India is indeed unique on account of its earthy and appealing sound.

An astounding technical control over the instrument coupled with a phenomenal musicianship, has made Hariprasad Chaurasia’s name synonymous with bansuri. Being a traditionalist and yet open to innovations, the legendary King of bansuri has, as a performer and a composer, explored a wide array of forms from classical to folk, Bollywood and crossover music.

In this recital, Hariprasad Chaurasia and his talented senior disciple, Rupak Kulkarni, will present individually and together, classical and semi-classical melodies. Rhythmic accompaniment is provided by pakhawaj; a two-faced barrel drum from the medieval period, and tabla, its later avatar comprising a pair of drums. Although both drums have surfaces that are loaded with a specially prepared material, the pakhawaj has a strong and majestic sound whereas the tone of tabla tends to be sharper and more pronounced.
