Crossroads: Weekend of Hindustani & Karnatik Music

Indian Classical | Hindi, Tamil

The Crossroads festival offers a weekend of the finest Hindustani and Carnatic classical concerts featuring both instrumental and vocal recitals from both forms of Indian classical music. Crossroads is an invitation to sensitive rasikas to enter the worlds of India’s great art music traditions and to appreciate the distinct aesthetic identities of each, respecting and admiring the differences and individual greatness of both forms of music. In the second year of the festival curated by First Edition Arts, it opens in Chennai on November 17th and 18th for the first time before traveling to Mumbai with the same set of musicians.

Day One:  We begin with a brilliant young Carnatic veena exponent Ramana Balachandran. He will be accompanied by the highly respected artiste Vidwan Satish Patri Kumar on Mridangam. This recital will be followed by an extended Hindustani vocal Khayal concert by one of the finest practitioners of this form, Apoorva Gokhale from Mumbai. She will be accompanied by senior accompanists, Bharat Kamat on tabla and Chaitanya Kunte on harmonium from Pune. She will also be accompanied by her senior shishya Amritha Shenoy on Tanpura and supporting vocals.

Day Two: We begin with one of the finest contemporary sarod artistes Arnab Chakrabarty from Toronto. He will be accompanied on tabla by senior tabla Maestro Pandit Ravindra Yavagal from Bangalore. The finale for the festival features Vidwan TM Krishna in a vocal recital with RK Shriramkumar on violin, KV Prasad on mridangam and BS Purushotham on Kanjira.
