The Bohra community eats in a specific way. There is a lot of tradition and history attached to each of our meals.
Home made serves their meals in a thal which stems from the tradition of Bohras eating collectively in a group of 8 persons. A thalis a large round metal plate, around which the family sitshelping themselves from the same dish, course by course. It's considered to be a symbol of unity, equality and sharing. A square cloth calledsafrais placed on the carpet, on which a raised metal or wooden stand calledkundaliis placed; the thal is then put on top of the kundali.
On this culinary experience hosted via Seek Sherpa every meal starts and ends with taking a grain of salt which is believed to clear the taste buds and cure many diseases.
The first course is then served, which interestingly is dessert. It is considered auspicious to begin the meal with a sweet dish. In the Bohra language, all desserts are called 'mithaas'.
The next course is the 'kharaas' or the appetizer which usually consists of a chicken, mutton or lamb dish and is accompanied by a salad.
The 'jaman' or the main course is almost always a rice dish. Favorites include kaari chawal and dal chawal palidu. Depending on the dish, jaman is accompanied by either a cold drink or soup. Dry fruits or paan (betel leaves) are a must before the family members taste the salt again to cleanse their tongues.
Our Typical Menu:
Gol nu Pani - A refreshing infusion of jaggery, water and chia seeds to beat the Mumbai heat.
Ice-cream - All our thals are incomplete without this Bohri favorite.
Dhuan Chicken - Rich aromatic gravy, succulent chicken, smoked for an earthy flavor.
Labeh Shiri - Layer upon layer of goodness a pudding you just can't get enough of.
Malai Cutlets - Delicately spiced kheema cutlets marinated in rich cream.
'Jaman' (Main Course)
Seekh Biryani - The classic Bohri Biryani served with seekh.
Limboo kachumbar - A classic accompaniment with Biryani and assorted achaars.
Jangbari Raita - Raita with a twist, only found in Bohri meals. Paan will be served after the meal.

We will be serving our Home Made meals in a traditional Bohri manner in a Thal which is a large dish placed on the floor with up to 8 people seated around it. Comfortable, loose clothing is advisable. Parking is a slight issue (we live opposite a hospital). We cannot promise a parking spot or guarantee the safety of your vehicle. No frills attached. Our food isn't fancy, it is, however, mouth-wateringly delicious.
Welcome Drink followed by 5-course meal. Pan and 'mukhwas' and a takeaway.
