MUMBAI LOCAL : MY KHAYAL, YOUR PRESENCE, OUR JOURNEY

“There is no other type of music where one melody [the raga] is played or sung for an hour,” says Arati Ankalikar, as she talks about the uniqueness of Indian classical music. “What is a khayal? It’s a thought. In a raga, the composition is a khayal – my thought on the raga.”

So can everyone access classical music, be transported by the khayal the artist offers? The answer, according to Arati seems to be both yes and no. An artist can transport the audience only if the audience wishes, and for this, the audience has to be entirely present intellectually, emotionally, and physically. “You study poker when you go to a casino,” she offers as a metaphor for audience preparation, “The audience has to give to take.”

We are delighted to invite Arati Ankalikar – classical vocalist – to Mumbai Local, to share with us her special relationship with Hindustani classical music. She will talk about ragas and khayals, audiences and artists, interspersing her talk with performance to share with us the world created when all of these come together. For her fans, this is a unique opportunity to hear her speak on how and why she makes music. For those who have an iffy relationship with classical music – here’s an opportunity to test the waters. Perhaps you will find yourself falling in love.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday for an immersive evening with Arati and her music. Let’s be present, as she asks, and see where the evening transports us. And do remember, if you can't make it to the venue, you can catch her live on our Facebook page.
