Mumbai Local: When God Is A Traveler - Of Journeys Personal And Poetic
back from his travels,
his voice wholegrain
his wisdom neem..."
Have you ever considered our journeys in life? Don't you think they are ceaseless? We're travelling in every moment - our minds, bodies, and spirits constantly transcending spaces, histories, memories and more. How does poetry engage with this sense of travel? Can language possibly be entwined into these journeys, making them both mundane and magical all at once? What if God was to be a traveler?
We're thrilled to invite Arundhathi Subramaniam - award-winning poet - to Mumbai Local. For Arundhathi, journeys are not just geographical. Her poetry traverses with abandon the diverse landscapes of the mythic, the contemporary urban and the existential. From journeys across the seemingly disparate sites of hermitage and court, to deeper journeys between the sensual and the sacred, the physical and the metaphysical, Arundhathi's language takes us on multiple voyages all at once.
And in this Mumbai Local, she will travel with us, on a journey peppered with gems of language and insight. Through excerpts from her highly-lauded When God is a Traveler, she will talk of her travels through language, and the fraught, exhilarating and perennial journey of growing into oneself. Her critical insights go hand-in-hand with her deep spiritual interest and engagement, making for poetry that is wondrous, precarious and startling all at once.
Look forward to a sparkling adventure with highly evocative poetry and a deeply perceptive poet.
