Natayashastra is an ancient book of Indian performing art, it was written somewhere between 200 BC to 200 AD. This book talks about all the aspects of performance. Rasa theory is a very crucial significant part of this scripture.
You are going to work towards understanding Rasa.
'Rasa ka matlab hai juice/essence/taste yani kisi bhi performance ya act ka feel. Jab koi actor act karta hai aur uss waqt audience jo mahsoos karti hai wo Rasa hai.'
Rasa can only be experienced. This is the heart of all the performances.
There are nine types of rasas therefore they are known as navrasas.
- Shringaar - Love, beauty
- Hasya - Laughter
- Raudra - Anger
- Karuna - Compassion
- Vibhatsa - Disgust
- Bhayanak - Horror
- Veer - Courage
- Adbhut - Wonder
- Shaant - Peace.
