The world that we live in is buzzing with myriad traditions and musical forms across various indigenous cultures. Music from around the world exerts wide cross-cultural influence as styles influence one another.
This event showcasing varied musical forms reaffirms the peaceful co-existence of cultural and artistic plurality in the world. With this event we celebrate the power of music as the healing force that promotes cross-cultural understanding and remind people of all cultures and religions that we share a common humanity.
Song of the Himalayasis conceptualised and led by Shantanu Moitra, the renowned music composer known for his many landmark Bollywood films including Parineeta, 3 Idiots, and Madras Cafe.
It springs from his 100-days journey across the Himalayas and the musical compositions that he created on the way, triggered by his interaction with the great mountains above the height of 14,000ft.
This event is a sequel to the earlier one presented last year, also with the same title, and covers the second half of his incredible journey through Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet and Arunachal Pradesh.
Shantanu will intersperse the musical presentation with more stories, more melodies and more breath-taking visuals. His ensemble includes two renowned folk musicians from the mountains joining Ani Choying, a celebrated Buddhist nun from Nago Gompa nunnery in Nepal, Kaushiki Chakravarty, a versatile vocalist with an uncanny command over the voice, flautist Ashwin Shrinivasan and sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee.
This multi-media experience is guaranteed to mesmerize the listener and bring him one step closer to feeling the magic of the Himalayas.
