and hence the longing to dissolve the physical realm and transcend into the spiritual universe
with Sama'a, the practice of listening to music, chanting and whirling, finally culminating in
spiritual ecstasy. Sufi music is practised in different regions of the world through myriad genres.
Manganiyars are hereditary caste musicians of the western Rajasthan, the region that boasts of a rich secular tradition of folk as well Sufi repertoire. Besides being keepers of genealogy for their Hindu patrons, Manganiyar community has its own magical style called jangra, which includes energetic voices and mesmerizing sounds of native instruments like kamaicha, khadtal and morchang. Mame Khan belongs to a family of singers from Jaisalmer region. Besides live events in several countries, he has sung for popular Bollywood movies such as No one Killed Jessica and Luck By Chance among others and recently won the GiMA Award winner 2016 Best Folk Single for his album Saawan. Khan will present works of Sufi poets of Sindh and Rajasthan, including Mira Bai, Kabir, Lal Shahbz Qalandar, Bulleh Shah and Baba Ghulam Farid.
