Science vs Paan Stains

Science vs Paan Stains

We think of science as solving the mysteries of the universe, the next medical or technological breakthrough, going into space, exploring black holes. Sometimes though, science commits itself to solving 'smaller' things, closer to the mundaneness of our daily lives, but equally life-changing in how we experience the world.

Mayuri Rege and her students decided to apply themselves to the problem of the ubiquitous paan stains that populate our experience of Mumbai's architecture. They scoured the city for paan stains, collected samples, ran laboratory tests and even did some cloning to come up with their solution. And they went on to win the Best Integrated Human Practices Award (undergrad) at iGEM 2018 - a global science competition.

We are delighted to invite Mayuri Rege - biologist, teacher, rhythmist - to Mumbai Local, to take us through the journey she and her students took as they applied themselves to the unique scientific challenge of removing paan stains. We will get an insight into how science works - the grunge work that is inherent to research, the fundamental scientific skills of framing problems and designing experiments, and the amazing application of some of the most advanced science to everyday problems - like our not-so-friendly neighborhood paan stains!

If you dream of a city free of paan-stained nooks and corners, you know you need to be at this talk! Do join us on Friday. Preferably at the venue, but if that is impossible, we will be airing the session live on our Facebook page for you.

Curated by Arnab Bhattacharya.
