He considers Elephant to be his birth animal and that is why - Senor Elefante is the stage name through which Nikhil Mawkin chooses to perform his original tunes along with covers that he has been associated with, for most of his music career.
Nikhil has mainly had 7 phases since the beginning of his career. The first one was primarily built of popular acts such as Bryan Adams and Michael Jackson, which opened him up to the second phase consisting of Rockabilly music which he was experimenting with while studying Opera techniques. With the help of Johnny Cash, Elvis and Tom Jones he came across Sinatra and Jobim. This further opened his world into music from Latin America, when he had a job that required him to set up a Latin act called The Cuenta Cuentos. Coming across songs such as Quizas, Quizas Quizas, and Besame Mucho, he realized resemblance in the Indian Film music. Which evolved into the longest phase till date in a project that he kick-started called Bollyjazz.
Somewhere in the middle, he imagined only performing music he wrote as Red Mawkin and produced an Album called Raag billy bop with his friend Phil Kaplan from Boston, but for now, from a Senor Elefante show, you can expect him to touch a bit of all the 7 phases, in the hope to discover his next phase.
Through all of it, he has been a drummer, a pianist, played some Bass even. But the whole time, his guitar and voice are the ones he remains most faithful to. Oh yes, and apparently he spent some time at the famous Berklee College of Music!
