Known for her powerful pipes and smokey timbre, Malini is an artist who cuts across various genres. She writes songs in English, Bengali, and Hindi, and her music cuts across genres- her last two original releases bear proof of the same. One is a traditional thumri in Hindi while the other, her latest, is an anthemic rock ballad about women empowerment in Bengali. The latter has been received graciously by the media and Calcutta music circles and has firmly established Malini as a torchbearer of women singer-songwriters in a predominantly male-dominated genre. Aside from her own music, she’s part of an experimental jazz band called Mixed Signals that she leads, and with which she has launched in Calcutta a relatively new genre called Bolly-Jazz. She’s also fronting a world music ensemble called Ziba that is led by the legendary guitar virtuoso, Amyt Datta. Alongside, she’s training in Rabindrasangeet under the tutelage of Ms. Srabani Sen.
