Is there a difference between storytelling and theatre? How does an actor negotiate these two terrains? Does he or she need to have different awareness, different skills for each?
Danish Husain found storytelling when he fell into performing Dastangoi. Till then, he had only done theatre. “Storytelling is a different art form, very different from a theatrical production," he claims. "In storytelling, the text is more fluid; it pre-dates writing. For storytelling you have to understand text, audience, orality. Actors tend to imitate storytellers, not be them."
We are delighted to invite Danish Husain - actor, storyteller, poet, theatre director - to Mumbai Local, to share with us his passion for theatre and storytelling and introduce us to the nuances that join and separate the forms. He’ll be sharing the Marsiya that he experienced annually as a child, the Dastangoi that he fell in love with as a young actor, and some of the performing texts that he delights to bring alive for audiences. And we will be getting a delightful peek into the craft of the performer – engaging, interacting and bringing worlds alive for his audiences.
Do join us on Friday to experience a consummate storyteller recount his journey with theatre and storytelling.
