Urdu Readings

Performances | Urdu | 1hr 30mins

Our hugely popular Urdu dramatic readings programme is back in a new avatar!

This edition will feature brilliant writing in different forms – letters, poetry, satire, articles, newspaper columns, and so on.

The first two sessions were a selection of letters written by Mirza Ghalib, followed by letters of Saadat Hasan Manto, Rajinder Singh Bedi, and Safiya Akhtar.
For the third and fourth sessions, we had a set of satirical and humorous tales by Pitras Bokhari, Ibn-e-Insha, Krishan Chander, Chaudhari Muhammad Ali Rudaulvi and Yunus Bhat, among others.

In the fifth and sixth sessions, we considered ‘Khaaka-Nigari’ — the age-old tradition of pen sketches in Urdu literature. We read pieces by writers, poets and social commentators such as Farhatulla Baig, Josh Malihabadi, Shahid Ahmed Dahelvi, Ashraf Sabuhi Dahelvi, Rashid Ahmed Siddiqui, Ahmed Bashir, Ismat Chughtai, and Saadat Hasan Manto.

Session #7: This session marks the beginning of our exploration of another form of Urdu writing - the Nazm (poem). We shall begin by looking at the works of Nazeer Akbarabadi, Sardar Jafari, Kaifi Azmi, Josh Malihabadi, Majaz Lakhnawi, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sahir Ludhiyanavi.

Readers: Asad Hussain, Nachiket Devasthali, Priyanka Setia & Udit Parashar

Programme conceived in association with well-known Urdu scholar, Aslam Parvez.
