About the movie
Jagte Raho (1956) follows the journey of a poor villager, played by Raj Kapoor, who ventures into the city in search of water and inadvertently becomes entangled in a web of suspicion, fear, and hypocrisy. He enters an apartment complex whose residents take him for a thief and chase him. He runs from one flat to another trying to escape. Along the way, he witnesses many shady dealings in the flats where he hides, ironically being committed by the "respectable" citizens of the city. The film unveils the stark contrasts between appearances and reality, exposing the moral corruption and pretensions of city life.
