Khayal Rang is a two-day annual festival curated and presented by First Edition Arts (FEA) dedicated to the exploration of the Khayal form in Hindustani classical music. Taken from the Persian word for `Imagination` the Khayal form offers a Hindustani musician a great degree of freedom and the possibility to improvise. Abstract and aesthetic music values are privileged over the text of the compositions. Each musician approaches the bandish or composition differently with only the words and raag remaining constant. Each presentation of a Khayal, therefore, varies in obvious and subtle ways. This year we present two instrumentalists and two vocalists from diverse gharanas. The festival is dedicated to the legacy and memory of 3 great Gurus and musicians who passed away recently, Pandit Tulsidas Borkar, Pandit DK Datar and Vidushi Annapurna Devi.
