MUNSHI PREMCHAND (1880 -1936) continues to be a mirror to Indian society and its traditions. A socialist, feminist, progressive intellectual much before these terms acquired their modern definitions, he believed in championing the cause of the marginalized through his writing. Greed, dishonesty, cruelty abound in this world, as do kindness, bravery and humour.
MOHAN RAKESH (1925 - 1972) was a modernist innovator in Hindi who deeply influenced Indias multilingual literary culture after Independence. His full-length plays Ashadh ka ek din (1958), Lahron ke rajhans (1963) and Adhe Adhure (1969) became seminal works of urban theatre, while his fiction sustained the 'new story' and 'new novel' movements nationally.
