After successfully introducing movie-goers to Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor in previous films, the decision to get all these big guns firing as one was brave to say the leastgiven that each of them inhabits a different space, and comes with his own set of quirks and characteristics. But writer-director Joss Whedon, a lifelong Marvel fan, recognizes that challenge clearly, and uses exactly that to form the basis of his story in order to come together to fight a common enemy, these superheroes must first sort out their own egos and differences.

The Avengers is not just your typical good versus evil kind of super hero flick. Here, before all scores are settled, it`s the good-versus-good hungama that keeps you glued to your seat. Blame it on the big egos of the superstars. After all, they are all super in their own rights, have never worked as a team to ward off evil... and never taken instructions from other super guys. Naturally then, fireworks and action cuts are bound to follow.

The Avengers is wall-to-wall action, executed with a fluid coherence we don`t get to see in most superhero films, and yet what stays with you are the lines and, resultantly, the characters. As this big, meaty film - this hero sandwich of a film, even - winds down, Whedon makes us do something increasingly rare in these over-franchised times: root for a sequel.

The Avengers is a result of the biggest buildup in cinema history, with the quartet of Iron Man and its sequel, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger made to pave the way for an epic boss fight, and it delivers in thoroughly awesome ways. Nearly every minute of The Avengers throbs with heart-pounding fun, from the big opening apocalyptic scene at the S.H.I.E.L.D base to the gargantuan effects-soaked final battle.
