Ashok Lal was born in a family of Urdu poets and students of literature (English, Hindi and Urdu). He took to theatre and to writing in 1970s. Besides his involvement with stage- as a playwright, director and actor, he writes for the electronic media and cinema and the print media, and conducts theatre, scripting and communication workshops for professionals, school and college students.
