Sandeep was born to Bengali parents in Calcutta in 1953. He soon developed a keen interest in music and taught himself how to play the acoustic guitar and the keyboard. He went on to compose over 200 songs, writing lyrics in Bengali, Hindi, and English.
He wrote his first rock opera, Operama, when he was a student at IIT Delhi in the late 1970s. Based on the Ramayana, Operama was staged as a college production in 1982. After receiving a B. Tech and an M. Tech from IIT, he worked as a computer engineer with NSIC and NIIT. Over the next two decades, he wrote Jaya and performed frequently at venues such as the Friends of Music gatherings in New Delhi. Jaya was staged for the first time by the Primetime Theatre Company in Mumbai in 1997. Sandeep passed away in Mumbai in 2003.
