Drama, Mythological | Marathi | Age 5+

‘Aaranyak’, a play in blank verse, forms the aftermath of the events described in the great Indian epic Mahabharata, and focuses on the elders of the royal family, the blind king Dhritarashtra, his devoted wife Gandhari, the queen mother Kunti, and Dhritarashtra’s half-brother, the royal adviser Vidura.

The events take place after the ‘war-Bhartiya yuddha’ has ended at Kurukshetra with the annihilation of Kauravas, in the midst of peaceful and righteous Pandava reign over the land. Dhritarashtra, tired and grief-stricken over the death of his sons, decides to leave the city of Hastinapur for penance, resolving to spend the rest of his days in the forest. Gandhari has never questioned his actions so far and resigns to follow his footsteps blindly even now. Kunti, in spite of her status as the queen mother, decides to join them in their quest for peace and is accompanied by Vidura, who has always been her friend, philosopher, and guide.

Act one, Rajprasadkhanda, takes place at the royal palace in Hastinapur where the tragic events compel the elders to leave their earlier lives behind and leave on the final journey. Act two, Aranyakhanda, follows the protagonists as they search for their inner selves in the midst of the wilderness. The play borrows elements from Bhagwat Gita philosophy and Greek tragedy to narrate this quintessentially Indian tale of fate and redemption.

The production of the play, presented by veteran artist combines the best of experimental and professional theatre, entertaining the audience while making think simultaneously.

The play Aaranyak is present by Zee Marathi, produced by Mr. Rahul Bhandare Adwait Theatre and Written and Directed by Sangit Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi winner Writer and Director Mr. Ratnakar Matkari.
