Barricade is set in the German elections of 1933, the subsequent political violence in which the Nazis attempted to blame their rivals, and the burning of books at Humboldt University in Berlin. A powerful allegory of our times, this story is told through the perspective of various characters who find their lives changed by these events – the honest journalist, the corrupt newspaper editor, Nazi officials, an upright judge, and the detached intellectual.
