Poignant, romantic, and frequently funny, Javed Siddiqi’s play Hum Safar explores the journey of an erstwhile couple at a crossroads, meeting over a period of several years. When Sonal (Lubna Salim) and Sameer (Harsh Chhaya) decide to divorce after fifteen years of marriage, they do so with the understanding that life can start afresh, taking separate paths. However, what seemed like an amicable solution leaves unresolved issues. While Sameer moves on in search of solace, an emotionally fragile Sonal finds herself trapped in isolation and despair. The intricacy of human emotions and the delicate threads holding a family together pull them toward each other and then apart. Their lives follow a bittersweet journey of marriage, divorce, and missed opportunities. Embellished with several poems by Gulzar in his own voice, the play reflects on love, urban alienation, family, and relationships.
