The 'King of Mathura' is a reinterpretation of a well known Indian mythological tale in contemporary theatrical idiom. King 'Kans' of Mathura has been portrayed as a dictator who is no different from Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse-tung and all the dictators who appear on the world stage from time to time. But what compels him? What makes a native, gentle, timid human to execute and persecute the masses? Journey of a man with the love for music, nature, and peace to an insomniac in pursuit of his identity as 'Man' - who could take over the dynasty, that he is compelled to believe. It is a clinical analysis of the phenomenon of dictatorship, shaped into a
play to enlighten and entertain the contemporary theatre audiences.
