A probing, controversial and explosive play from the veteran playwright P. L. Deshpande. The play takes on the moral custodians of the culture of the ’70s. As expected, the play faced headwinds with a ban and the censors went heavily against it. Tendulkar and director Kamlakar Sarang were both targeted. There were attempts to stop the shows. Deshpande responded to the controversy in his style and wrote a play called Bhagwan Sri Sakharam Binder. While it appears to be a parody of Tendulkar’s Sakharam Binder, Pu La ridicules the hypocrisy of a moralistic society. The play was never presented onstage. Pu La’s humorous take therefore never reached the audience. The unique production of this play is, in short, a comedy family drama, led by Suresh Jadhav, Sunil Jadhav and Mangesh Satpute.
