Manohar Kahaniyan

Manohar Kahaniyan

Drama | Hindi

Manohar Kahaniya is one of the many stories that is being written once every 15 minutes in our country. The plurality of the name refers to the simple fact that though we narrate one story but it is just one of the thousand same stories. All that changes are the circumstances and the faces.

More than 100 cases of rape are registered in India every day. This means every 15 minutes a woman is getting raped in India. Only 30% of cases are reported. This does not include all other instances of crime against women including dowry deaths, honor killings, attempt to rape, sexual offenses etc. While the rate of charge sheets has been as high as 95%, the rate of conviction is just about 28%. While the role of the Government, law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in preventing and dealing with such cases is important but it also goes to show that we as a society have not only been unable to procreate a generation of responsible citizens, especially males. Our own roles as individual citizens, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends also have an important role to play in bringing about social change. The very occurrence of such incidents, what happens behind the closed doors of the courtroom, the social and media trials that happen on the streets, on newsprint and the ever-expanding visual media reveal an overall social apathy to issues of basic human dignity and tolerance.

In this play we narrate the story of Suzette Jordan, better known as the Park Street Rape victim
