The multi-award-winning love story that threatened an empire makes its debut at The Grand Theatre.

Why should you attend?
  • Winner of 7 Broadway World India Awards 2017.
  • A grand cast and crew of 150.
  • Features iconic songs from the original 1960 film.

Based on K. Asif’s timeless 1960 film of the same name, ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ - a musical masterpiece by Feroz Abbas Khan – is set for its first staging at The Grand Theatre.

Narrating the timeless tale of Salim and Anarkali, the famous star-crossed lovers of the Mughal era, the musical features a breathtaking cast and crew of 150, and features some of the biggest Indian and international theatrical talent such as Mayuri Upadhya (Choreography), Manish Malhotra (Costume Design), Neil Patel (Scenic Design), David Lander (Lighting Design), John Narun (Projection Design), Richard Nowell (Sound Design), Mukesh Chhabra CSA (Casting) and Deepesh Salgia (Producer).

Unfolding in the expansive embrace of the 2000-seater Grand Theatre, the story is as epic as its setting, set in the glorious Mughal era where emperor Akbar’s son Salim returns victorious from the battlefield after fourteen long years, to promptly fall in love with the beautiful courtesan, Anarkali. The emperor, disapproving of the relationship, imprisons Anarkali — leading Salim to declare war against his father. This uncompromising love and rebellion threaten the future of the Mughal empire, creating the heart of a grand conflict.

The sensorial, larger-than-life extravaganza features original songs from the movie, sung live, along with 550 exquisite costumes. Having won hearts with performances in Mumbai, Delhi, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore along with recently concluded tours of Canada and the United States, it now comes to The Grand Theatre - which has previously staged India’s largest ever musical, ‘The Great Indian Musical: Civilization to Nation’, also conceived and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan.
