Nanhi Jaan Ke Do Haath is a celebration of the stories of Ismat Chughtai, one of the greatest female Urdu writers. Honoured with the Ghalib Award and the Padma Shri, Chughtai has penned many bold and groundbreaking works, including Lihaaf and Mughal Baccha. In this play, Do Haath, she presents a sharp satire on a society that publicly enforces moral rules but secretly breaks them to fulfil personal desires.
The story revolves around Old Mehatarani and her daughter-in-law, Gori, two compelling characters who highlight the stark contrasts between high society and the lower class in terms of values and hypocrisies. Gori, abandoned by her husband for three years, becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son, whose "two hands" represent her support and hope. Old Mehatarani defends Gori and her grandson despite societal protests, boldly confronting the hypocrisy of those who judge her while hiding their misdeeds.
With humour and sharp critique, Ismat raises essential questions about morality and double standards, leaving the audience to reflect on the answers. Nanhi Jaan Ke Do Haath won the Best Play Award at the Triveni Theatre Festival and now returns to the stage, honouring the timeless brilliance of Ismat Chughtai.
