Ashadh ka Ek din is a very popular text of discussion and references among
literature and theater community. It is an epic text, in Kalidass words it means - it is a conflict between time and desire. It is also a milestone in the history of Hindi theater. In a larger perspective, this play reflects the conflict between emotional, ambitious and survival self of human. A self which is already bound by patriarchal structure and rules. Just to underline the patriarchal society, all the characters are played by male actors except Mallika as this play is also a conflict of gender.
The language of the play is in written script but its presentation is more raw and everyday like and it ends up breaking away the period of written text. The music and interludes are composed in such a way that might not counter or enhance the scene but it gets you somewhere in your memories. They are simply a celebration of hope that makes us move forward even in such difficult times. The set is designed so that it breaks away the local and time of written scripts and help to bring out different and deeply rooted meanings of play. The actors do not play the period but the different point of views of characters with different reference to our lives.
This performance is an attempt to question the patriarchy that forces an individual to behave or live in a particular manner. In the end,
this theatrical experience a very personal introspection of time and desire.
