"Do not speak unpleasant truths," said the elders of the past. But no one paid heed when they also said, "Do not speak pleasing lies!" Our achievement lies in hiding unpleasant truths and parading lies. Lies dominate our historical records, textbooks, academic debates, public forums, and media. Those who wore the garb of lies became revered as great souls, divine beings, or beloved leaders. Meanwhile, those who lived truthfully were ridiculed throughout their lives—what an irony!
The historical drama "Satyavanne Heluttene" (I Speak the Truth) written and direceted by Addanda Cariapa holds a mirror to the truth. Truth is harsh, bitter, and difficult to digest. When one speaks the truth as it is, people rise up and confront them—there`s even a proverb about it! This play revisits many truths that were buried in history and brings them back to light, offering the present generation a glimpse of reality. Through engaging dialogue, the work captures attention. It provides a glimpse of what might emerge if the characters of history were compelled to speak only the truth.
This play is a treat for seekers of truth. Addanda Cariappa with his courage has boldly unveiled on stage the truths that might have been hidden or forgotten by someone, somewhere.
