A gripping serial replete with suspense and humour - THE HINDU
Staged at multiple National Theatre Festivals, Simantini is a witty, stimulating, daring comedy play based on Somerset Maugham's The Constant Wife. Translated by Utpal Jha and adapted by the veteran theatre personality Meghnad Bhattacharya.
The play revolves around Kaninika, a calm and intelligent homemaker, and her husbands extra-marital relationship with her friend Rangeela, who lights up many a male heart by her pretty face and coquettish airs. The play starts with a gradual unfolding recognition of this scandalous adultery which Kaninikas sister angrily disapproves of while her mother seems to accept for the sake of preserving Kaninikas marriage and saving her from social stigma.
In this backdrop, the drama takes a different turn with the emergence of Kaninika's former suitor after 15 long years. The theatrical peak is reached with the sudden appearance of Rangeelas workaholic, indulgent, but jealous husband revealing the infidelity in front of everybody. How will witty and modern Kaninika react to this revelation of the truth? Will she seek legal recourse? Can the ardent love from her former suitor indulge her in changing the life? The climax of the play holds the answers to these intriguing questions.
